The Purpose of Yoga

Why do we practice yoga?

If you were to ask others, you might get many answers:

It's good exercise
To get more flexible
To meet people
To reduce stress
To heal from an injury
My doctor said I should
My therapist said I should
To find bliss

These are all valid reasons to practice yoga. However, to get the full benefit of yoga, we need to understand that yoga can help make us the best possible person we can be. 

That's a lot! It's lofty. It's true. It's worth repeating:

yoga can help make us the best possible person we can be

With yoga, we should not try to be the best. We are not in competition with others. We are not even competing with ourselves. We are merely practicing to better manage disruptions in our body and in our life.

Yes… with yoga, we can get stronger and more flexible  
Yes… with yoga, we can feel part of a community  
Yes… with yoga, we can reduce stress  
Yes… with yoga, we can heal from physical and emotional injury  
Yes… with yoga, we can find peace through life's challenges

Yoga is the right path and the right destination
